Section-A
1. (a) What is the function of shift registers? What are its various types and where are these registers used?
(b) With the help of neat diagram, explain the steps involved in instruction fetch cycle.
2. (a) What is the purpose of using address modes? Write different types of address nodes with suitable examples.
(b) What is op-code? Explain the general format for the memory reference instructions and write six important memory reference instruction.
Section-B
3. (a) Compare the characteristics of RISC and CISC computers.
(b) With the help of neat diagram, explain the concept of pipe-lining and its advantages.
4. (a) Write the major instructions of RISC processor with syntax.
(b) What is vector processing? Why is it used? What are the major advantages?
Section-C
5. (a) Multiply 6 by 14 using Booth multiplication.
(b) Subtract (1001)2 from (1110)2using 2’s complement method.
6. (a) What are the advantages of 2’s complement method?
(b) Divide (101100)2 by (100)2.3

7. (a) What do you understand by interrupt? how is it works?
(b) What are the advantages of DMA interface? Explain the working of DMA.
8. (a) Explain handshaking and polling.
(b) What are the major functions that are performed by CPU to handle the I/O devices? Explain.
Section-E
9. (a) Write major features of 8086 microprocessors.
(b) Compare the 8086 and Intel Pentium.
10. (a) Write a program in assembly language to perform addition of two numbers.
(b) Discuss the functions of index register, memory address register and memory buffer register.
